John Deere and Sustainable Farming [CES 2024]

The John Deere booth at CES is always fun to stop by. Whether you’re gaining insight into how autonomous technology helps with sustainable farming or just having fun sitting in a real tractor, something not likely to happen in the city, you can learn a few things about agricultural technology.

John Deere has been pushing the narrative of being more than an agricultural and construction equipment company. We checked out their booth at CES 2023, where we saw how their “See and Spray ultimate” method used cameras and machine learning for sustainable farming by reducing herbicide use.

At their booth at CES 2024, John Deere showed the process of automated cotton picking, from harvesting to clothing production. They showed this in partnership with the black-owned Bridgeforth Farms in north Alabama.

Talking with the John Deere experts, we learned that the cotton can be traced back all the way to where it was picked on the farm. It helps keep tabs on how that area was performing so poorly or so well. Things that matter in increasing efficiency and sustainability.

Seeing and feeling the cotton squares, to the cotton bales down with a visual walkthrough of the cotton farming to clothing process, brings necessary tangibility to understanding cotton farming and sustainable agriculture tech.

John Deere was named an Innovation Awards Honoree in the Sustainability, Eco-Design, and Smart Energy Category for the John Deere Operations Center at CES 2024, their fifth year receiving an award from the CTA.
The John Deere Operations Center™ is an opt-in cloud platform that empowers farmers to create optimized work plans, monitor job quality, and analyze and receive insights from data anytime and anywhere.
