MediaTek Executive Summit 2023

The 2023 MediaTek Executive Summit took place in Laguna Beach, California. They discussed the MediaTek 9300 Dimensity chip and the future plans.

For the second year, I was invited to MediaTek Executive Summit. This year, it was held in Laguna-Niguel, California, at the Ritz Carlton. Opened by Kevin Keating, the Executive Summit was set for attendees for a couple of days; we learned about MediaTek’s trajectory, goals, and new partnerships for the upcoming year. We also had a chance to dive in and learn more about the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 chip that was announced around the same time as the summit.

I am familiar with MediaTek chips, and while they’re mostly in phones that don’t come stateside, I’ve had the chance to experience some of the many devices powered by them. If you have an Amazon Echo Show 5, XGIMI Horizon Projector, or a Sony PlayStation VR 2 headset, then you have a MediaTek powered device. The newly announced MediaTek Dimensity 9300 chipset will largely be seen in Android smartphones in China. We got some hands-on time with the Vivo X100 smartphone at the MediaTek Executive Summit.

Each year, MediaTek chips power more than 2 billion devices with some of the world’s biggest brands to deliver incredible experiences and enhance everyday life,” said Finbarr Moynihan, General Manager and Vice President of Corporate Marketing at MediaTek. “Our partners bring MediaTek innovation to life, and together, we are driving cutting-edge designs that the world relies on. The Expect Incredible Awards help bring much-deserved appreciation to our customer and their products that make a difference in the everyday lives of consumers.”

At the summit, they also launched the MediaTek Expect Incredible Awards, where respected industry analysts recognized the top MediaTek-powered devices. It wasn’t just for mobile devices; it went across all industries. The devices were judged based on performance and design. When it came to Best in Mobile, the Oppo Find N2 Flip smartphone won, with the Vivo X90 Pro smartphone as the runner-up. For the Best in Computing, the OnePlus Pad (tablet) won first place. The Sony PlayStation VR2 headset took first in Best in Entertainment.

At the Executive Summit, MediaTek Vice President Vincent Hu and Jean Bourfarhat, VP of Reality Labs, Meta Platforms, announced MediaTek’s partnership with Meta. They will collaborate to develop advanced silicon for AR smart glasses.

We learned more about MediaTek’s growth and plans in Mobile, Automotive Vision, Strategy, Broadband, and Connectivity and held a question-and-answer session with the MediaTek execs.

I am all for data and talking strategy, but the real treat was when professional skateboarder Tony Hawk came on stage to discuss the impact gaming had on his life. Many attendees had the chance to play Tony Hawk in his game Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater.

While chipsets aren’t always at the forefront of regular technology discussions, their power, and performance are often talked about.
