JBL E40BT Design / Style

When looking at the JBL Synchros E40BT you notice right away, they’re more playful in style. These headphones aren’t slick and simple looking a la Synchros S700 or Harman Kardon Soho. They are more hip and youthful. I have the red pair, which is a crayon red.

For the most part, the outer part of the Synchros E40 BT is the red matte plastic material. On the outer part of the headband there’s a metallic JBL Logo. The inside of the headband has a leatherette padding. Very cushy. At the sides of the headband is the slider where you can adjust the length of the headphones. They did a good job of hiding the sliders. The JBL E40 also have 3D aluminum swivel hinges that allow for adjustment of the earpads depending on the shape of your head. Those who have a hard time finding comfortable headphones, might want to look into this.

Once you get to the ear cups you have the same leather padding as the headband. Soft and cushy as well. In the middle of the (inner ear cup) you have the mesh that covers the 40 mm drivers. On the outside of the right ear cup you have a silver plate with the JBL Logo.

For the most part the design is simple. The color contrast of the red body with silver accents is what makes the headphones stand out. While they are on-ear headphones, they aren’t so huge.

Experience

As you know the main selling point for the Synchros E40BT is that they are wireless. So they come with a USB cable for charging the lithium-ion battery. The jack is 2.5 mm which is smaller than the regular jack. Just thought u should know.

Setup

Once the headphones are charged, setup is pretty easy and straight forward. There’s a button on the back border of the left earcup. It has the Bluetooth logo. Just hold it down for a few seconds and it will go into scan mode (you will hear a double beep). Put your phone (in my case the Samsung Galaxy S5 to scan for Bluetooth devices) and once you find the JBL headphones click OK to pair them. You will hear a quick beep when they’re paired. There’s no pass code needed. Smooth sailing!

Listening Experience

If you’ve read any of my previous headphone reviews, you know that I mostly test the headphones during my commute to and from the office. I give them a run at the gym when the workouts aren’t too intense. I try to use them in basic day to day activities. So the next step is obvious, test these bad boys out with some classic tracks.

You can control volume and playback with the controls on the outside of the left ear-cup. You have four controls on the top, bottom, right and left of the aluminum plate. the top and bottom control volume levels and tracks. The button on the front side is the play / pause, and answer / end call button. The button on the back is the ShareMe button which allows you to pair to other JBL headphones with the ShareME feature. When you pair, you can share the music from one music player.

I started with Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal“, and “Love Never Felt So Good” Juanes “Nada Valgo Sin Tu Amor“, Janet Jackson “Escapade” and Linkin Park “No More Sorrow“. The headphones sound full and clear. The E40BT headphones are about volume and melody. You get a full range of sound of highs and lows. What you might be missing is an overdone bass. While you get bass, it lacks a little on certain tracks where bass is the main thing.

I definitely enjoyed how loud they were. They do a very good job at noise isolation without the ear cups putting pressure on your ears. On my daily commute it drowned out a lot of noise when the volume was high (but not at max). That was a big thing for me.

It’s hard for me to wear on-ear / over-ear headphones in the summer, but the JBL E40BT will do just due to their light weight and great fit.

Are the JBL Synchros E40BT Headphones For You?

These are great headphones for their price range. While they’re not bass heavy, you can hear highs and mids very well. The lows are good too. You should definitely try these out when you’re on the hunt for your next pair.

At $100, I say you’re definitely getting a major bang for your buck. You’re getting 3 major things in one. First, you’re getting trusted brand. JBL products are known for producing great sound; the Synchros E40BT are no different. You’re getting comfort. The E40BT are super light-weight. Meaning, that you can wear them for hours without feeling them, and you can adjust the ear cups for less pressure on your ears when needed.
