Sony WF-1000XM6 Earbuds Review – Checks All the Boxes

Sony has spent years dominating the premium audio space, and their latest flagship release, the XM6, is no exception. After spending a few months putting the Sony WF-1000XM6 earbuds through their paces during daily commutes, office hours, and content creation sessions, here is my break down how they actually hold up.

SONY WF-1000XM6 EARBUDS DESIGN AND BUILD

Sony decided to shift directions with the design this time around. While the previous generation focused on shrinking the footprint, the Sony XM6 earbuds feature a slightly larger, more elongated oval housing. This change was made to accommodate an upgraded microphone layout, but it does impact the overall fit. They are a matte black color. The case is also matte. It’s slightly larger than the previous gen’s case.

The XM6 Fit: The XM6 earbuds sit securely in the ear canal thanks to the hybrid silicone and memory foam tips included in the box. It creates a tight seal and fit. As I stated earlier, the earbuds are a bit longer. I’ve used them when power-walking, and they stayed snug in my ear, even though they stick out a bit more just because of the new shape. They do not easily slip out during workouts. They have an IPX4 water-resistant rating, but they are not meant for use at the gym. Because they occupy more space in the ear, I did experience some outer-ear fatigue after about 4 hours of continuous wear. The earbuds come with four ear tip sizes: X-Small, Small, Medium (already on the earbuds), and Large. They are color-coded to make switching easier. It’s the little things.

I am not a huge fan of the foam tips that the XM6s come with. I used the foam tips for most of my review to get the full experience. After my review period, I switched to the SpinFit tips since that material is more breathable for me.

SOUND QUALITY ON THE SONY XM6 EARBUDS

Out of the box, the XM6 shifts away from the heavy consumer bass of past models toward a much more balanced, reference-style sound profile. The sense of space is the standout feature here. Instruments are positioned distinctly, giving tracks a three-dimensional depth without relying on artificial spatial audio settings. Vocals are forward and crisp, featuring a natural texture. The treble is bright and energetic, though it can occasionally border on aggressive depending on the genre. You can change the EQ to your liking with the Sound Connect app.

ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION (ANC) ON THE SONY XM6 EARBUDS

If your main goal is to block out the world, these earbuds are exceptional. Sony packed eight microphones into each earbud, powered by a new QN3e processor that handles external frequencies incredibly fast. Those are the specs for “tune the world out”. The MTA in New York City has gone crazy with PA announcements. It’s one announcement after another, so active-noise canceling has been more useful than ever. When on the train, the low-end rumble is almost completely erased. When it comes to working and the office environment, higher-pitched sounds like keyboards and background chatter are muted down to a faint whisper, making it easy to focus without blasting music.

SONY XM6 EARBUDS FEATURES & THE SONY SOUND CONNECT APP

As with all Sony headphones, you access the earbuds’ features through the Sony Sound Connect app, which serves as the central hub. You can do things like create a custom equalizer setting or adjust any preset EQs. The 10-band custom equalizer is highly responsive. If the stock treble feels too sharp, a quick adjustment to the “Soft” preset instantly solves the issue.

One of the features I think is underrated is Scene-based Listening. With Scene-based listening, the Sound Connect app matches the music to what you’re currently doing. It didn’t always get it right for me, but I keep on “training” it, and it’s gotten better. Background Music is another great feature. It’s one of those things you don’t know you need until you start using it.

As for Connectivity on the XM6 earbuds, Bluetooth 5.3 provides multipoint connectivity, allowing for seamless switching between two devices. The codecs are great for most flagship Android devices.

Battery Life

Battery performance is reliable, landing right around the industry average for premium earbuds. The Real-World Use of the XM6: you can expect about 8 hours of continuous playback on a single charge with ANC turned on. I let them run on a phone at 75% volume, and I got 8 hours and 15 minutes. Which is obviously great use time. I doubt I would wear these for more than four hours anyway.

The charging case provides an additional two full charges, bringing the total to 24 hours. And on days you forget to charge, a quick 3-minute charge gives you a full hour of emergency playback. The case charges wirelessly, too. I did drop it a couple of times and the earbuds did not go flying out. There is a case cover made of vegan leather available in the same colors the XM6 earbuds come in, Black and Light Gray.

VERDICT ON THE SONY XM6 TRULY WIRELESS EARBUDS

At $329.99, the Sony WF-1000XM6 earbuds are a significant purchase. They need to check all the boxes for you. They are positioned at the absolute top of the premium market. They are great all-around, which is why I would definitely recommend them.

For users who prioritize elite noise cancellation, detailed audiophile-leaning sound, and deep app customization, the investment pays off. The Sony XM6 is a great addition to the tech bag for anyone who needs a dependable daily driver for noisy environments. If you can master the fit, you will love the XM6 earbuds.
